Orison Swett Marden

Father of the modern success/self-help movement

Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924 is credited with being the Father of the Modern Success/Self-Help Movement in America. He was the founder of "Success Magazine" which he first published in 1897. He quickly built up the magazine to a wide circulation of nearly 500,000, which was an enormous circulation for its day.

Marden, orphaned at the age of eight, overcame many obstacles to eventually became a self made man. Inspired by a book he found in an attic, "Self-Help" by Samuel Smiles, he went on to earn a Doctorate In Medicine from Harvard, as well as one in Law from Boston University. He was a prolific success writer and authored more than 50 popular motivational and inspirational books.
